			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Banking has always been tough before for Entrepreneurs but in this economy you need to be alert and take extra precautions. Here are some new rules to follow to help your business keep flowing.</p>
<p><strong>1. Get more credit cards.</strong> Yes, I know some people are advising against this because it could have an adverse affect on your credit score. I can argue about how that theory is wrong but your credit score isn’t the important point today, credit is. The problem is that banks are raising rates on credit cards on any excuse they can find. Additionally they are also freezing cap amounts and no longer extending credit. As you pay down the credit card your cap automatically lowers. This gives you no more credit and makes that card worthless to you. You need to get more credit cards when you can so you have options if problems with your others occur. New cards often have low teaser interest rates for 6 to 12 months. We all know this can work against you when you hit the time deadline but in the meantime you can transfer balances on cards you are having rate spikes with today. Deal with today’s problems and then work on cures for the future. </p>
<p>2<strong>. Watch your merchant accounts carefully.</strong> Banks have the right at any time to pull out money for a reserve if they feel they need to. If you are counting on that money for operations and all of a sudden it gets frozen you can be in big trouble. The best recourse against this is to build a relationship with someone at the bank who works in merchant services and the higher up you can go the better. The relationship isn’t a guarantee something won’t happen because most of the banks are tied in with card processors and don’t do the work themselves. Nevertheless you are better off with a bank advocate pleading your case then you are talking to the 800 number recording. </p>
<p><strong>3. Establish more than one merchant account.</strong> Banks always want all your business  but today you simply cannot afford to do that or you may wind up with an account you can’t use and it will take more than 30 days to get a new one. In the mean time you can’t take new charges on your old merchant account so you lose lots of cash flow. Having a back up is an answer and use both of the accounts for some of the processing each month so you always know they are working. Even then alarms will go off when the account all of a sudden has more money running through it then the banks computers think is normal but at least you should be able to explain that you are now using them for all of your processing so that’s why the spike.</p>
<p><strong>4. Consider lining up one or more investors who are prepared to step in should you have a crisis.</strong> If your merchant account does get a reserve requirement slapped against it you will eventually get the money so you could use that reserve for a private loan. I am not saying this is easy but think about this and other resources before a problem occurs gives you more time to act because you know what you need to do and who you might call to help.</p>

<p>It is a good idea because there are frequently mistakes in them that lower your credit score and as we all know, credit is tightening.  Go to the web site I have listed, and you can order free from one, or all three at the same time. If you order one now, you can then order from the other two over the course of 12 months so you can view your credit more often.  Order all three at once and you’re done for 12 months, which I don’t think is as good. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Congress is notorious for giving wonderful sounding names to new bills they want to pass just to fool the public who don’t read them. They are about to do it again. </p>
<p>Senator Kennedy and Rep. Rosa DeLauro are pushing the “Healthy Families Act”. Who could object to a wonderful name like that? </p>
<p>The bill requires any firm who has 15 employees to provide a minimum of 7 days of paid sick leave. I have no problem with that and have always had sick leave days in my companies.  My preference is that you don’t come in when you are sick and spread whatever you have to everyone else.  The problem with this law comes in the form of detail. The bill allows you to take the leave anytime and in the smallest increment the employer tracks payroll, and no notice is required. This kind of language would allow an employee to show up consistently late with no advanced notice, ultimately causing all sorts of problems with real staffing issues, especially in shift positions. An employer would have no retribution for such tardiness and disruption to everyone else. </p>
<p>There are other new bills coming down the pipeline, which impact our business. I encourage you to look beyond their names and see what the real affect they will have on your business. <p>During this recession and economic pullback, price can have an appeal and if you can compete on that level than you should point it out loudly and even make it a competitive advantage.</p>
<p>A couple of interesting examples and how value can be successfully marketed is Validas (<a href="http://www.myvalidas.com">www.myvalidas.com</a>) and InchWorm Shoes (<a href="http://www.inchwormshoes.com">www.inchwormshoes.com</a>).</p>
<p>Validas offers to shave an average of 22% off your mobile phone bill by letting them analyze what you are currently paying and making some suggested changes. You can upload your bill and pay $5 for a report that shows a breakdown of usage, compares carriers, and makes other suggestions for saving money.</p>
<p>InchWorm Shoes is a clever example of problem solving. We all know the cost of shoes and for kids how fast they outgrow them. Inchworm Shoes has a special technology that allows you to increase the size of your child’s shoe by pushing a button and pulling on the toe. Shoes can grow in half size increments and can expand up to three sizes… now if they could just do that for men’s pants I’d save a ton.</p>
<p>Keep thinking about the benefits your products and services have and remember …price can be a successful one.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Steve Martin’s first huge comedy album was called, “Let’s Get Small.”  I think that title is actually great advice for a business, particularly a big company.  Because I find that the bigger they are, the worse they are at the small, but really important things that make it easier to do a deal with them.  And I was just reminded of that fact recently.</p>
<p>I’ve been putting together “The Ultimate Business Celebrity Mastermind” &#8211; an elite Mastermind group for some of my top clients, where we’ll travel around the country together and experience some things that usually only entertainment celebrities get to experience while also working with each other to build everyone’s businesses using a wide array of strategies that are working right now across multiple industries.  As part of the package, I’m also including some really special Celebrity Events, two of which have been locked down for a white, the Grammys in L.A and the Kentucky Derby.  Pretty cool, right?</p>
<p>The problem was that these events were so cool that, when it came to putting together the third and final Celebrity Event for the year, I wanted to make sure it could hold its own and didn’t look like a weak excuse for a celebrity event!</p>
<p>Since I do live in Orlando, and since I actually do have a family I like to see occasionally, I thought it would be nice to set up one of the events here.  And there is a bunch of cool stuff to do in Orlando that is a great mix of business and entertainment, so I contacted a venue that I thought might work for this new Mastermind group. </p>
<p>But, again, since the Grammy night has bumped everything up a few levels, I wanted to make sure this place could deliver something special on their end.  So I called my usual contact, who transferred my call to a really knowledgeable colleague.  I was very upfront and said I needed something with the “Wow” factor to really make this work – and that she was, in effect, competing with Las Vegas, which was my other choice for a Celebrity Event site.  </p>
<p>Anyway, she was very, very helpful and indicated she would work with me on making the event happen and at a magnitude that I’d be happy with.  She’d email me contact details and we could go from there.  Awesome.</p>
<p>Except this is where the problem started.  She never sent the email.  Instead, a week or so later, she called and left a voicemail with another colleague on the line &#8211; again, it sounded like these folks were all over this and ready to make it happen.   She ended the message by saying I should call her back at a phone number with a very long extension attached to it, which in corporate America is not very unusual.  What I usually do is just call back the number on caller ID and ask for the person I’d like to speak with instead of using the extension, mostly because I’m often driving or traveling when I return calls and I don’t have the best circumstances to stop and take notes!  I looked at my iPhone for the caller ID – because, normally, I just hit the button that instantly calls back the person who left a message – and the number pops up on my screen as “Not Disclosed.”   </p>
<p>A private number. In the words of many a comic book character, “What th-!”<br />
I thought about the business associate I have in New Zealand.  I can even push the callback button to get him on the line!   And, at that moment, I didn’t have time to listen to her message again, write down a whole long of string numbers that probably would have taken two or three tries to get right and call the person back.  </p>
<p>And so I kept the message, and kept meaning to find a time to call them back when I could write down the number.</p>
<p>In the meantime, I had continued to explore the Vegas option, which looked better and better as time went on.  If she called back or sent me the email with her contact info in it, I would certainly still give the Orlando venue a fair shake, but my time was wearing thin!  As I was working on the logistics of a vegas trip that would be both educational and entertaining, I hit the motherload!  I was able to connect through a friend with Tony Hsieh, the billionaire CEO of Zappo’s, the online shoe selling phenomenon, and he agreed to host our Mastermind group at the Zappo’s facility in Vegas and do an in depth brainstorm and Q &#038; A, revealing some of the secrets that made him the mogul he is today.  That’s Grammy-caliber to business people and exactly the kind of event I was looking for.  Orlando, sadly, was left on the outside looking in.</p>
<p>Don’t get me wrong – this venue is not about to go under because they didn’t host our Mastermind group.  But they did end up missing out on tens of thousands of dollars worth of business – because they didn’t make it easy for me to get back in touch with them.<br />
Which is surprising – on almost all counts, because the staff at this venue excels at customer service, they’ve always been great in the past.  But the private phone number mistake is just the kind of little mistake a big company like that might not ever notice and correct.</p>
<p>When it comes to our own businesses, I think the mantra needs to be, as I said at the beginning of this piece, “Let’s Get Small.”  We all think our own customer service is top quality, but are all our systems really seamless?  Are we really making it as easy as possible for our clients and customers to connect and do business with us?  Are sales phone calls being handled correctly by the people answering them?  Or, worst of all, are calls from interested prospects just getting lost or unanswered?</p>
<p>Yes, the Orlando venue made a mistake.  Let’s not make the same one with our own operations.  Otherwise, after we’ve lost a big client, we might end up like they did, wondering why the phone isn’t ringing!</p>
